What is tooth extraction?
Tooth extraction is the removal of teeth from the dental alveolus in the alveolus bone.
Why are teeth removed?
There are lots of reasons for teeth removal. For example, if you have:
- Infection: Can’t be restored with RCT
- Mobile (high grade)
- Furcation involved
- Trauma
- Crowding (ortho treatment)
- Impaction
- Abnormal tooth development
- Periodontal disease
- Fracture
- Luxation
How to prepare for tooth removal?
- Education point about tooth extraction
- Anxiety-reduction protocol
- Take a proper medical history
- Take precautionary measures against that medical disease e.g. diabetes, CVS disease, asthma, blood pressure, e.t.c.
- Calculate anaesthesia dosage
- Give anaesthesia
- Flap raise
- Luxate tooth
- Tooth removal
What is anaesthesia for tooth removal?
- Local anaesthesia
- Iv sedation
- General anaesthesia
Aftercare for tooth removal
- Squeeze the socket properly
- Clean socket with saline
- Remove any debris
- Place gauze on extraction side for 3-4 hours
- Prescribe pain-killer and antibiotics
Instruction after tooth extraction
- Remove gauze after 30 mins
- Eat cold ice cream without any nuts
- Don’t spit again and again at least for 24 hr
- Don’t use a straw
- Don’t eat hot food
- Start with a soft diet
- Rinse with salt water after 1st day of the extraction
- Limit physical activity for 24 hr
- Avoid smoking
- If bleeding continues for 2 hr, place gauze again
